A dog-eat-dog world

We go through our lives with the ability to make choices. Do we want to succeed in school or just slack off during our four years of college? Do we want to go see the new movie out in theaters or wait for it to come out on DVD? Whatever the question is, we can solve it usually by making a choice. Well, there are some that do not have that luxury.

If you asked a dog whether they would rather live in a cage at a shelter or live in a warm, loving home it seems very likely they would choose the latter. Unfortunately, they do not have the power to make this choice. Dogs must wait for a family to make their own choice to decide whether they want to love and care for them.

According to estimates from The Humane Society of the United States, 6-8 million dogs (and cats) enter shelters each year. Of that number, 3-4 million are adopted from these shelters annually. Along with that, though, another 3-4 million are euthanized each year.

It's a sad fact that we take any choice out of these animals hands and make the decision to end their lives for them. This is an issue that has always shook me to my core.

This is because I am an absolute dog lover. I have two dogs of my own; a dachshund named Cleo and a basset hound named Boris.

This is Boris. He is such a terrific dog and my family just so happened to have adopted him from an animal shelter. He had been abused as a puppy and left on the side of the road when he was found and brought to the Clermont County Humane Society in Batavia, Oh. That's where our family found and fell in love with him. It's been a match mProxy-Connection: keep-alive

e in heaven ever since.

From stories about animal shelters to the dogs that live in them, I will take it upon myself to make sure that every voice is heard. Being the dog lover that I am, I hope that I can make even a small impact on the adoption process. Dogs may not be able to talk but they deserve a voice in this issue too.
